Police in Mchinji district are keeping in custody Mandala Chirwa, 26, for illegal possession of ivory weighing 24 kilograms.
According to Sub-Inspector Moses Nyirenda, the suspect was arrested during a joint operation by law enforcers and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.
The operation followed a tip-off that people at Jobo village in Sub-Traditional Authority Pitala were selling ivory.
The information led to the arrest of Chirwa and recovery of 3 pairs of Ivory weighing 24.03 kg. Sub-Inspector Nyirenda said the police are hunting for two other suspects in connection to the illegal possession of the ivory.
Chirwa will face charges of illegal possession of specimen of protected species contrary to Section 86 (1) of National Parks and Wildlife Act of 2004 and dealing in Government Trophies/Selling without permit contrary to Section 91 (1) of National Parks and Wildlife Act of 2004.
The suspect hails from Lubaini village, Sub-Traditional Authority (STA) Pitala in the district.
