Don’t be quiet – Chisi wants Mutharika to speak on Chanco closure

The president of Umodzi Party, Professor John Chisi has called on State President Peter Mutharika to speak on the closure of Chancellor College.

Chisi who also works at College of Medicine said Mutharika as the father of the nation need to address the citizens of the country on the way forward on the matter.

Professor Chisi said it would be good to hear the stand of the president who is also the Chancellor of the college.

He then bashed government for accepting an unnecessary fees hike saying the Mutharika administration is responsible for the student demonstrations.

“The issue of fees is not the issue of students and the council, it’s the issue of the government and the parents of the students. The matter of the fees has nothing to do with the council.

“Now the president of this country is the father of the nation, so what do the father say concerning the matter? The president of Malawi should explain well on the matter of hiking the fees,” said Chisi.

He then wondered why government accepted the decision to raise the fees considering that the country is in economic crisis.

On Wednesday last week, the Chanco administration issued a statement informing all parties of the closure of the institution due to what they called illegal demonstrations by students who were protesting against fees hike.

On Friday, Malawi Polytechnic students blocked the Chipembere Highway as they wanted to protest against the same fees hike.

They were stopped by the police who threw teargas canisters at the students. A few running battles broke out, a development that saw the teargas affecting patients at the nearby Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

    President has to speak not only because he is a chancellor of Unima but also as a father and first gentleman of Malawi. Unima cannot make decision Without his approval as the chancellor.

    Imagine, if the president is busy elevating chiefs, where is the minister of local government if you may argue that the president should not speak on this.
