South African house DJ and producer, Black Coffee, has made history having claimed the BET award for best international act Africa two days ago in Los Angeles, United States of America.

Black Coffee overcame seven other Africa’s representatives in the hot contention for the prestigious honour.

Among those he overcame are his countrymen; AKA and Cassper Nyovest, who were considered favourites to win. Some of the biggest losers in the category are the Nigerian duo of Yemi Alade and Wizkid who did not even dare to attend the event. The reigning king of East African music, Diamond Platinumz also lost out despite the hype.

Black Coffee has become the first South African to claim a BET award.

This comes after years of failure by other artists from the rainbow nation to break the deadlock.

Malawi can only hope for a nominee in the prestigious awards in years to come with celebrity rapper, Tay Grin, and songstress Zani Challe, making strides to penetrate the international platforms with their music.
