Days after a team of volunteers walked from Lilongwe to Blantyre under the Beyond You initiative to raise funds for a children’s ward at the Kamuzu Central Hospital, Vice President Saulos Chilima led a team of Malawians and development partners to raise funds for the hospital again.
Chilima and the well-wishers who joined him for the good cause together raised K27 Million through the Rider Golf Tournament that took place at Lilongwe Golf Club towards purchasing of Diagnostic machines at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
Chilima led the Malawi team that thrashed the rest of the world team that was captained by outgoing British Ambassador Michael Nevin by 40 points to 36 points.
After the tournament, Chilima commended captain Nevin of the rest of the world team, for his support to the welfare of Malawians and government.
In his remarks, Nevin said he was happy that they raised that amount of money for a good cause while also having fun.
“I hope that the tournament would take place again next year and our team will win,” Nevin said.
In his remarks President of the Golf Union of Malawi, Frank Mvalo, said the inaugural tournament was a huge success as it had received massive support from sponsors, government and development partners.
Mvalo said they would shortly start the process of procurement of the diagnostic equipment like ex-ray machines and incubators, among others.
Among the major sponsors of the tournament were Standard Bank, First Merchant Bank, New Building Society, FDH Bank, Petroleum Importers, Metropolitan Health, Airtel, Nico Holdings, Toyota Malawi, National Bank of Malawi, Rab Enterprises, Old Mutual, South African Airways, Cross Roads Hotel and Honorable David Bisnowarty.
