Three jailed after damaging man’s eye

Three men who beat up a man in an attack in which he lost his eye have been jailed in Blantyre.

The three convicts, Mavuto Joseph, 25, Ganizani Muyaya aged 31 and James Matiki aged 26 have been jailed for nine years each.

ArrestedAccording to Assistant Public Relations Officer for Limbe police station Widson Nhlane, the three last year unlawfully caused grievous harm to a certain man in Bangwe Township.

“What happened is that the three men on 3 November last year in Bangwe Township caused grievous harm to a man by beating him with a blunt mental,” said Nhlane.

The medical reports were tendered in court as evidence and on 27 May this year the presiding magistrate Loyce Chirwa found the three guilty.

In mitigation the three asked the court to exercise lenience when passing judgement because they have children who depend on them.

But magistrate Chirwa said the offence is serious as the victim lost his eye so they deserved a sentence which would deter would be offenders. He then sentenced them to nine years imprisonment with hard labour.
