Kachere residents get rude awakening

Kachere residents in Blantyre today had a rude awakening after a bulldozer demolished their houses and structures.

According to reports, there was heavy police presence in the area when a Mota Engil bulldozer went about its business of tearing down the houses.

Some families were in tears as they saw their houses and structures such as shops being demolished.

“There is a high presence of police officers at Kachere Township in Blantyre as the government through Mota Engil are demolishing buildings and structures to pave way for the construction of the dual carriages way. Some families could be seen in tears as they watched their properties being destroyed,” some Facebook users posted.

Mota Engil is constructing the 64 Km Blantyre-Zomba road which will pass through Kachere Township where it will be widened. Thus the construction firm has to demolish houses and structures built in areas reserved for the road.

Malawi24 understands that the residents were already compensated in 2011 but they were reluctant to move.

However, some Malawians said the residents got what they deserved considering that they were already compensated by the company.

But others argued that the construction firm should have still notified the residents on the actual date of the destruction.
