There is an irony around Muhammad Sulumba’s promising performance which inspired Nyasa Big Bullets to a 2-0 victory over their neighbours Mighty Be Forward Wanderers in the Chifundo Shield Cup on Saturday.

Nomads have been afforded the luxury of having Peter Wadabwa in their team due to one of the biggest mistake in Young Chimodzi’s career, letting him leave the capital city side while they are short of experienced strikers.

But it was their own blunder of letting Sulumba slip through their hands to join Bullets that came back to haunt them.

Wanderers blitzed past Franco Ndawa’s men in a whirlwind during the closing 45 minutes at the Civo Stadium and appeared on course to produce a massive comeback after the introduction of Nigerian star Amos Bello.

But Bullets had already roared in the first half. From midway in his opponent half, Sulumba needed only two minutes to get into Wanderers’ area before showing composure and technique to check back on his left foot and volley past Nenani Juwaya.

The goal wowed the Bullets faithful, simultaneously creating the poisonous atmosphere on Wanderers fans considering that the goal scorer was once a fan favourite at the blue side of Blantyre.

At Wanderers, the 22 year-old once suffered verbal abuse by a section of the club’s supporters in Mzuzu after he failed to deliver in his team’s 3-0 defeat to Mzuni fc.

In subsequent games he was left out of the Nomads first eleven after he had also endured frustrating trials at Free State Stars in South Africa.

His path at the Nomads was blocked by the likes of Luka Milanzi, Mapopa Kaunda as well as Jabulani Linje and with the coming in of Peter Wadabwa, Sulumba was likely to be low on the pecking order of Wanderers striking force.

At Bullets, Sulumba has now scored four goals from the six friendlies that the team has played so far.

Though he is yet to make his debut with his new team in a competitive fixture, Wanderers fans will surely look back on Sulumba with sad notions of what might have been.
