Three get 10 years for burglary

The Midima senior resident magistrate court has sentenced three people to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour each for burglary and theft.

Police have identified the three as Petrol Sanena, 27, Charles Matabwa, 25 and Frank Charles, 25.

According to assistant public relations Officer for Limbe police Widson Nhlane, the three suspects broke into a house of a certain family in Chigumula.

crime (2)He said the men stole two television screens, two DVD players, one electrical fan, a Samsung S4 phone, assorted foodstuffs and assorted bottles of cosmetics all worth K1.2 million.

Nhlane further said the police investigated the matter and the three were arrested.

In court, the three pleaded with the magistrate to exercise leniency when passing judgement because they have family members who look up to them.

But the state prosecutor said this was a serious offence and they deserved a stiffer punishments to deter others from committing the same offence.

The court sentenced the three to 10 years imprisonment for burglary which is contrary to section 309 of the penal code and 2 years for theft each. The criminals will serve the sentences concurrently.

Sanena hails from Kaweluza village T/A Changata in Thyolo while Matabwa and Tchale hail from Perusi village T/A Chimaliro in Thyolo district.
