Police in Blantyre have arrested a 22 year-old man for being found in possession of Indian hemp at Wenela bus depot in the city.
The suspect, Robert Austin was arrested after well-wishers tipped Police officers who were on duty of patrol around the bus terminal.
Confirming to Malawi24, Blantyre police deputy spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said police officers from Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were tipped about the suspect who had Indian hemp locally known as chamba.
The suspect was arrested around midday on Tuesday when he was about to board a minibus to Machinjiri township after our CID officers were following him,” said Mayawo.
Mayawo further said that the police found the cannabis in the bag that the suspect carried.
The suspect is yet to appear in court to answer charges of being found in possession of cannabis sativa contrary to Section 4 (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Regulations and 19 (1) of Dangerous Drugs Act.
Austin hails from Ziyanjana village, Traditional Authority (TA) Nthilamanja in Mulanje district.
