Civil society organizations (CSOs) in the country have advised President Peter Mutharika to strongly condemn death threats directed at the Chancellor College lecture, prof. Blessings Chinsinga.
In joint statement released on Thursday, March 24, the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Centre for Development of People (CEDEP) say death threats against Chinsinga are not a laughing matter.
The lecture reportedly started receiving the threats after his presentation at the fourth stakeholders meeting that was organized by the Public Affairs Committee in the commercial city of Blantyre. He said there is a group of people who are planning to assassinate the lecture for being critical of the Mutharika government.
But the two CSOs have demanded assurance from the Mutharika administration on the protection of members of opposition, civil societies, journalists and all politicians in the country
