The Millennium Challenge Account – Malawi, is implementing the Energy Compact with funding from the government of the United States of America through the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The Compact became effective in 2014.

Larsen and Toubro is one of the companies working on the Compact and is constructing 400/132 KV Substations at Phombeya and Nkhoma. He assured the people that these sub-stations will help to boost electricity transmission and distribution in Malawi.

Mr. Goel informed the communities that the construction of the Nkhoma substation will start very soon and will be completed by November,’2017. He thanked the people of the area for accepting to have the station constructed in their area.

This is a big contribution that the people of this area have made to national development.

Larsen and Toubro recognize that for it to build a state of the art substation, it will require not only cooperation from the people of the area but also full participation, taking ownership of the project and protecting the facility as much as possible.

The construction of the station has immediate benefits for the people around here. A considerable number of men and women will be employed. The people that will work here will need services and food stuffs and men and women from the communities will find some businesses and earn some income for their families.

Mr. Goel mentioned that Larsen and Toubro will ensure that the impacts that come with construction are minimized as much as possible.

As a Company Policy, L&T is committed to conserving the environment, providing a healthy and safe working environment to all employees & stakeholders.

He emphasized that these efforts can be achieved if the communities and the company work together and are in constant communication. Mechanisms including committees such as the grievances committee will be facilitated and promoted for effective engagement with each other.

The company will be happy to receive any complaints resulting from the construction and work together to resolve them for the benefit of the people here and the project.

The company has employed specialized staff that will work closely with the communities in order to develop and promote smooth and profitable relations.
