The Dowa magistrate court has sentenced a traditional healer to nine years imprisonment with hard labour for raping an epileptic girl.
Dowa police spokesperson Richard Kaponda identified the convict as 38 year-old Stanford Wallick who hails from Sadibwa village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje district.
He said the 16-year old girl met her fate on the night of January 27 when she went out of her parent’s house to answer the call of nature.
While outside, she met the witch doctor who is a neighbour. The beast later dragged the girl into his house where he raped her.
When he appeared in court on March 7, the man pleaded guilty but asked for a lesser punishment saying he was in a relationship with the teenager.
The mitigation was objected by police prosecutor, inspector Beston Chimbelenga, who said being in a relationship with the girl wasn’t a defence considering the fact that the girl was epileptic and maybe the abuser took advantage of that.
Passing the sentence was first grade magistrate Emulani Phiri who said such cases are increasing in the district and the nine-year sentence has to be a lesson to would-be offenders.
