The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) over the weekend came to the rescue of the Southern Region Football Association (SFRA) by handing out prize money to teams and players for their achievements last season.
The football governing body gave out prize money totaling 4 million Kwacha to the teams and players during a ceremony in Blantyre.
The event followed a pledge which FAM made after supposed league sponsors sportswear manufacturer Nsejjere refused to release prize money claiming that the company had not agreed to sponsor the league.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu Manda pleaded with existing and prospective sponsors to humbly respect and honour their pledges.
“Let me appeal to leagues to ensure that they should sign contracts with sponsors to avoid being taken for a ride,” Nyamilandu said.
Southern region football association chairperson Raphael Humba thanked Malawi’s football governing body for the timely rescue.
On the prizes, Premier Division champions Max Bullets who were promoted to the country’s Super League were given K1.5 million, the second-placed team pocketed K750,000 while the third-placed team received K500,000.
Division one champions Matamando got K500,000, Nyambadwe received K300,000 for finishing second while third-placed Fomo were given K200,000.
Top goal scorer for the Premier Division McPeter Makwale of Cobbe Barracks and Division One‘s Lasten Kamuyang’ana received 40,000 kwacha each.
