The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has revealed to leaders of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members of the opposition party who leaked the WhatsApp conversation that led to the arrest of three MCP officials.
The DPP claims that a WhatsApp group for MCP supporters who live outside Malawi – whose members include Lucy Chitembeya and Kondwani Kabwila leading the USA and Allan Mandidi, Edgar Shani, and Tobius Mapulanga leading the UK and Europe, are the ones that leaked the conversation.
Kondwani Kabwila, the vice chairperson for USA who is among those accused, described the development as a plot to divide the united MCP.
“This has left MCP wondering at the intentions of the DPP and thinking that it is not true that DPP can reveal their source of information to the same people that they are victimizing.
“I do not think DPP is doing that in good faith, what they are doing is bad governance. How do they arrest people without justification, that is political harassment of the highest order,” said Kondwani Kabwila, who is brother to MCP
MP Jessie Kabwila. While others who are named to be the DPP and Police sources refused to comment on the issue, MCP’s Rhoda Kamchacha, a vibrant member of the WhatsApp group who is also a secretary for the MCP diaspora branch lambasted the DPP and Police for failing in their duties. Last week, police chief Lexten Kachama admitted to have arrested the MCP leaders to only warn them and said the police are yet to get orders from government on whether to prosecute the three officials.
Police arrested MCP executive member Msungama, spokesperson Jessie Kabwila and legal adviser Peter Chakhwantha after a leaked WhatsApp conversation led the law enforcers to believe that the three were planning to overthrow President Mutharika’s government.
