The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has condemned the office of Director Public Prosecution (DPP) for using WhatsApp conversations as the basis for the sedition cases against opposition members.
The Malawi police arrested Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila and MCP’s legal advisor Louis Chakhwantha over plots to remove President Peter Mutharika using “Egypt style.”
Commenting on the development, MLS president John Suzi Banda has condemned the DPP for using the WhatsApp conservation as facts for the sedition cases.
“If government is using this conversation that has gone viral on the social media, then this is laughable because every Malawian has a right to organize a demonstration but if government has more than what we have seen ready to be proven in a court of law then it is okay,” said Banda.
Meanwhile, National Police spokesperson Nicolas Gondwa has confirmed that the two have been charged with Sedition in accordance with Section 51 of the Penal Code.
