Malawi Police at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe have arrested a man for trying to leave the country with forex that had no supporting documents.

Lufeyo Chitukukula was arrested on 18th January around 12:30pm for attempting to externalise forex.

South African RandMalawi24 understands that the suspect was about to board SAA 171 plane to South Africa when he found himself in hands of the law enforcers.

Reports indicate that he was searched by police officer upon arrival at the departures lounge. It was in his luggage where the police found South African Rands worth about K4 million.

However, Chitukula failed to produce supporting documents forcing the police to arrest him. He is currently in police custody while the money has been seized.

Chitukula will therefore appear before court soon to answer two accounts: attempt to externalise foreign currency and illegal possession of foreign currency without ministry of finance approval.

Attempting to transfer currency is contrary to section 11 of Exchange Control Act of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), whereas illegal possession of foreign currency is contrary to section 25 of Exchange Control Act.

The suspect hails from Tsanulani Village, TA Njolomole in Ntcheu and he is 35 years-old.
