Deputy speaker Chiwaya encroaches on woman’s land and gets her arrested

Sunganani Kampira, a 36 year-old woman from Mangochi is facing defamation charges after she stood up to deputy speaker of Malawi’s Parliament Clement Chiwaya who has encroached on her land.

Chiwaya got the woman arrested claiming that she had called him a wizard.

According to local media, the incident occurred on 6 December in Michesi village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda where the deputy speaker is constructing a filling station on part of the woman’s land.

Mangochi police public relations officer Rodrick Maida said the woman called Chiwaya a witch for encroaching on her land in the construction process.

Meanwhile, Kampira has been charged with three cases namely defamation which is contrary to section 301 of the constitution, charging a person with witchcraft which is contrary to section 4 of Witchcraft Act, and causing breach of peace which is contrary to section 182 of the penal code.

Kampira hails from Michesi village in the area of Traditonal Authority Mponda in Mangochi district. Hearing of the case will continue at Mangochi First Grade Magistrate Court on 8 February, 2016.
