As the year 2015 draws to a close, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has expressed its concerns over the way the Malawi government has handled cashgate cases during the year.

According to the party’s spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, the party feels that the Peter Mutharika led government has completely failed to properly handle the cases saying they observed an aspect of favouritism.

However, Kabwila acknowledged the arrests that have been made over the year but she said government has failed to arrest some officials who are being suspected to have played a role in the theft of the money.

She further said that the punishment that has been given to the cashgate convicts by the Malawi courts is not even as stiff as expected.

Kabwila added that it is worrisome that the theft of government money led to suspension of aid from donors and this has led to the worsening of the country’s economic situation.

She then advised government that in 2016 it should do all its best to investigate and have all implicated officials nabbed regardless of their positions in the current administration.

Over 70 people are answering miscellaneous charges related to the scandal.
