Police publicist for the district, sergeant Ignatius Esau, confirmed the development to Malawi24 on Friday and said he is confident that they will nab the suspect.

According to police information, the victimised girl was coming from prayers when the suspect coaxed her into his house where he forced himself on the girl.

This angered friends of the victim and they reported the issue to elders who followed up and found the suspect still easing his randy on the little girl.

“They found them inside the house and the grandmother of the victim Grace Sakala reported the matter to police,” Esau said.

However, when police arrived at the scene, the suspect had already escaped to an unknown destination. Nonetheless, police in company of villagers took the girl to Nkhatabay district hospital where medics confirmed that the girl was indeed defiled.

The suspect hails from Chigoli village, traditional authority Kabunduli in Nkhatabay district.

Defilement is contrary to section 138 of Malawi’s penal code and the maximum sentence for the offence is life imprisonment. Related cases are currently dominating headlines in the local media.
