Zomba based Red Lions pushed themselves to a 1-0 victory over Mzuni football club in a match that took place on Sunday at Zomba community centre ground.

The game started 45 minutes after the usual 2:30 PM because of the heavy rains which made the field not conducive for play.

A tight match was then started by referee Denis Nguluwe to mark the begining of the first half as both teams had few chances to equalise, up to the 45th minute when it ended 0-0.

Mzuni defenders Bob Longwe and Raphael Mandanda tightened the defence to give no room for the running Bonface Kaulesi in the first 15 minutes of the second half as the Reds frequently visted the dangerous zone of Mzuni.

The lone goal came in the 25th minute from Malumbo Mkandawire after coming in as a substitute as he utilised chance o beat two defenders anrd took a shot which beat Mzuni’s goal stopper Labson Chiyenda.

Alex Ngwira, coach for Mzuni was red then carded after insulting the officiation team. Aftet 90 minutes, the score was 1-0 in favour of the soldiers. Red Lions’ Moses Namkumba was crowned the man of the match.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi24, Reds coach Pritchard Mwansa applauded his players for the good job. On the other hand, assistant coach for Mzuni, Nelbert Kazuwa, accepted the defeat and said they are looking forward to the remaining game against Mafco as they need a single point to survive.

Red Lions have now pocketed 38 points and they are remaining with games against Kamuzu Barracks and Wanderers to wrap up the season.

Mzuni who also lost 2-0 to Big Bullets on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium , are going back to the North with no point in two games.
