One of the cement manufacturing companies in Malawi, Lafarge, has expressed concern over the huge number of fake cement being found on the market.

After conducting a survey in Chirimba Township in Blantyre, Lafarge found that most businesses are selling the company’s cement illegally.

The company has come to note that the businesses sell the product at K6,000 but it weighs between 35 and 40kg while real cement weighs 50kg.

Business Development Manager for Lafarge, Nestor Msowoya, said the sellers are changing the seals of the product including the bag thereby reducing the quality of the cement.

“We have found that most people are selling fake product with low grades, fake bags and seals,” he said.

However, the company managed to find one of the sellers in Chirimba Township.

The seller, who was identified as Yasini Saidi, failed to explain where he usually buys the 35-39 Kilograms of cement which he offered at the price of K6,000.

Lafarge sells its 50kg bag of cement at K6,500.

Meanwhile, the company has promised to proceed with the survey in all parts of the country and has assured that all sellers of counterfeit cement will face the law.

Lafarge is doing the research together with the Malawi Bureau of Standards as well as Malawi Police.
