Driver arrested for causing death

Malawi Police in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody 31 year-old Sayizi Molesi for allegedly causing an accident that killed a person.

According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda, the accident occurred at Mkaika trading centre as the driver failed to control a cruising motor vehicle and eventually hit a male pedestrian, Jimmy Chimbalanga (40).

“The driver, Molesi was travelling from Salima heading towards Nkhotakota. He reached Mkaika trading centre where he hit Chimbalanga who was crossing from left to right side of the road,” said Kaponda.

road accidentFollowing the accident, the victim was rushed to Alinafe private hospital in the district and died while receiving treatment.

The motor vehicle, Noah registration number NN 7623 which Molesi was traveling in had its windscreen and left headlamp damaged as the driver sustained minor injuries and was treated as an outpatient.

Police have since arrested the driver on charges of causing death and reckless driving contrary to the Road Traffic Act (RTA). According to the postmortem results, Chimbalanga died due to severe head injuries and right arm fracture.

Chimbalanga hailed from Namalo village in the area of senior chief Mwadzama in Nkhotakota district while Molesi hails from Mtalenje village in the area of senior chief Mwadzama in Nkhotakota district.

The police have since appealed to the general public to follow all road precaution measures more especially when using M5 road which is small and when approaching busy areas to avoid accidents.
