Man killed by a speeding car in Zomba

A fatal road accident in Malawi’s old capital city involving a Peugeot saloon killed a cyclist on Saturday around 6 o’clock in the evening.

Police in Zomba confirmed the accident and identified the cyclist as Lawrence Kasongo aged 55.

Speaking to Malawi24, Zomba police deputy spokesperson, Davie Sulumba, said the car with the registration number BLK 57 and driven by Lawrence Kamundi was coming from Domasi direction towards Zomba city and just close to Chikupira bridge the driver lost control of the car and hit two cyclists.

“The two cyclists Lawrence Kasongo aged 55 and Mphatso Wilson were cycling towards the same direction. “Casualties were rushed to Zomba Central hospital where Kasongo was pronounced dead while receiving treatment as he sustained leg fracture and severe head injury,” Sulumba said.

The car also swerved to the extreme near the side where it hit a maize mill and a brick fence . Malawi24 spoke to a close eye witness, A Mrs Chinunda, who said the car was on high speed.

“Both the driver and two passengers, a man and a woman were drunk and beer bottles were in the car,” Chinunda said.

Kamundi will appear in court to answer charges of causing death by negligence.

The deceased, Kasongo, hails from Mpezeni Village, Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba district.
