The Malawi government has come under fire for intentions to give jobs to Civo United F.C players in the civil service,after beating Mighty Wanderers in the 2015 Standard Bank Knockout Cup final in Lilongwe.
A cross section Malawians commenting on several media outlets social media platforms wonder the basis for employing the players, some of whom they dub ‘not educated.’
‘So everyone will get a job for the win.What of those with very low qualifications and wits to work in the civil service.” commentated one fan with other backing the argument.
Some Facebook users while commenting in vernacular Chichewa trashed the decision in the wake of incessant reports of trained doctors leaving Malawi due to failure by the government to employ them.
Government’s Chief Secretary George Nkondiwa made the promise at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe during a luncheon with the newly crowned Standard Bank Cup champions.
He was responding towards Civo’s captain Emmanue Zoya’s request in which he pleaded with the Capital Hill to consider providing jobs to the players since football is a very short term career.
“I pleaded with government to employ us as football isn’t enough to keep us going. Our football career is very short so we don’t want to be beggars when our playing days are over,” said Zoya.
In his response, Nkondiwa said government will soon start employing the players but was quick to say only those with right qualifications will be considered for various job post in the Civil Services.
“We have heard them and let me assure the players that those with right qualifications should compete for available jobs in the civil services and be considered like any other member of the society,” he said.
