Days after the American government warned the Malawi government over the arrests of two men engaged in sodomy, Germany government has joined the campaign saying the country needs to respect the LGBTI campaign.
Germany ambassador Peter Woetse in a press statement released on Thursday said his government is following with great concern on the recent developments that led to the arrest of the two.
“The facts on the December 7 arrest of two Malawian citizens who allegedly were charged with sodomy in violation of section 153 of the Penal Code may need further clarification,” said Woeste in a statement.
He also added that he welcomed Malawi government’s policy of not arresting, detaining, charging or pursue people engaged in consensual-same sex activities saying it is in the line with the modern nations of the world.
He then asked the government to respect the rights of LGBTI.
“Germany is passionately committed to human rights. And LGBTI rights are human rights. We share with Malawi the utter conviction of their universality,” reads part of the statement.
Woeste was quick to condemn some Malawians who have been vocal to LGBTI defenders on the social media.
“But I am deeply disturbed by ill-mannered reactions I am reading on the social media, especially people who defend LGBTI rights are confroted with violent and disrespectful verbal abuse.”
“Are those the same fellow brothers and sisters who are normally very vociferous about the idea of a Christian Nation? Are those the same people who ask for a prayer at the begining of every meeting?” wondered the Germany ambassador to Malawi.
