Malawi 24 Code of Ethics and Editorial Policy
As a publication, Malawi24 and its journalists strictly abides by the Media Council of Malawi Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct at all times. We follow these principles:
Accuracy: We strive for accuracy and thoroughness in the writing and reporting of news. All material produced by our journalists and published by all our platform shall be credible, balanced, fair and verifiable to all sides.
News and Opinions: We shall distinguish clearly between news reports, speculation and expressions of opinion.
Plagiarism: Malawi24 respects the intellectual property law and strives at crediting all sources whenever necessary.
Correction: Whenever it is recognized that a significant inaccuracy, misleading statement or distorted report has been published, we correct promptly and with due prominence and an apology is published whenever appropriate.
Objectivity: In reporting news, a journalist shall strive for objectivity.
Balance and Fair Play:
1. We shall make every reasonable effort to present all sides of the story.
2. A fair opportunity for reply should be given to organizations or individuals.
Advertising: Advertisements and public announcements shall be accurate and clearly distinguishable from news items.
The right to Know: While facilitating the public’s right to know, our journalists shall observe the following limits:’
1. A journalist has an obligation to protect confidential sources of information.
2. A journalist shall not identify victims of sexual assault or publish material likely to contribute to such identification unless, by law, he/she is at liberty to do so. Similarly, a journalist shall not, even where the law does not prohibit it, identify children under the age of 13 who are involved in cases concerning sexual offences, whether as victims, witnesses or defendants.
3. A journalist shall avoid prejudicial or pejorative reference to a person’s race, colour, ethnic origin, religion, sex or sexual orientation or to any physical or mental illness or disability unless such reference is relevant to the story.
4. A journalist shall generally not obtain or seek to obtain information or pictures through misrepresentation or subterfuge unless it can be justified that such materials cannot be obtained by any other means.
5. A journalist shall generally avoid identifying relatives or friends of persons convicted or accused of crime, unless the reference to them is necessary for the full, fair and accurate reporting of the crime or legal proceedings.
