The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the Malawi Blood Transfusion (MBTS) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will see football fans donating blood during Charity Shield matches.
The event took place at the Mpira Village on Monday.
Speaking after the reaching the agreement, FAM President, Walter Nyamilandu said the FA saw it fit to rope in MBTS having learnt of the blood shortages that have hit hospitals in Malawi.
He said FAM therefore saw the need to help MBTS in the same course of urging people to donate blood.
He said that the FAM beleives that the Charity Shield initiaitive this year will help MBTS see blood donations to cut short the shortages they have.
” We thought it fit to help this time around. We have organized a match between Nyasa Big Bullets and their town rivals Mighty Wanderers at Civo Stadium on 9th April. It is during this match that MBTS will collect blood from donors. It is our hope that in the quest to help our relatives who are sick and in dire need” he sad.
According to Nyamilandu, the agreement has also give the MBTS a go ahead to meet with football clubs to rope in their hand in their projects and activities.
On her part MBTS’ Chief Executive Officer, Natasha Nsamala could not hide her garitutide of the agreement.
”This is one of the projects that will help us cut short the required blood to help people in dire need. Annually, we need 80 thousand units of blood to reach out to the needy but as of today, we have just managed to collect 30 thousand units and with this partnership, we can collect more blood from well-wishers.”
She added: ”This shows commitment from them as it will give opportunity to people who are in-need of blood to get the much needed support from Malawians who patronizes football matches. We know the fan base that FAM commands and we hope that this will be good for the nation.”
This will be the first year a Charity Shield will take place in Malawi and the FA has named it the Chifundo Shield.
The proceeds amassed during the match between Bullets and the Nomads will be channeled to the Kamuzu Central Hospital for purchase of beds.
