Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has described the year 2015 as a year of challenges as regards to teachers’ welfare in the country.

TUM general secretary Denis Kalekeni was responding to questions on how his organisation fared this year.

Kalekeni: We had very big problems.

Kalekeni stated that it is important that education should be recognised as a key to success and that teachers play a big role in the process.

According to Kalekeni, teachers faced a lot of challenges in creating a good environment for education.

He said that no single teacher was promoted during the year 2015 and he also cited government’s failure to recruit 20,000 teachers who finished teacher’s training in the year as a challenge for the education sector.

Kalekeni however explained that the year 2015 was successful in terms of payment of teacher’s salaries.

TUM has since said that they will be looking forward to government’s assistance in the coming year.
