Athletics Malawi (AM) has emphasized the need to invest in nurturing Local talent in a bid to develop athletics in the country.
AM Vice President and Technical Director James Phiri made the call on Tuesday in Balaka during the event dubbed the ‘Balaka Run’ competition, which was organized by Andiamo Trust.
According to Phiri, investing in young talent is a milestone as far as athletics development is concerned.
“I have observed that we have a cream of young athletes in the country, and I am upbeat that if we concentrate on developing their talent to a different level, as a country, we can get some medals soon,” said Phiri.
In his remarks, Balaka District Sports Officer Moses Arthur Chimbetete commended the Trust for its contribution as far as athletics development in the district is concerned.
“Let me hail Andiamo Trust for their tireless efforts to the development of the sports in the past 20 years,” said Chimbetete.
He further challenged parents to encourage their children in various sporting activities while embracing sports as not only a mere activity but as a career.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the Andiamo Trust, Alessandro Marchetti, has pledged for continued support in athletics development in the district.
The event also provided an opportunity for the dissemination of various crucial messages, including messages bordering on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and many others.
The event attracted athletes drawn from schools and clubs within and outside Balaka District.
The winning students went away with school bags and other school materials while those from clubs received cash prizes as a token of appreciation for their participation in the event.
