1 of 3: Blantyre water supply resumes

Water shortage hits Rumphi- Malawi24

Blantyre has finally got one of its three headaches out of the way.

After days of dry taps that left thousands of residents scrambling for water, relief is finally reaching parts of Blantyre.

The Blantyre Water Board (BWB) says water pumping operations have resumed following emergency repairs on a major transmission pipeline, although some areas remain dry as the system gradually recovers.

This follows the completion of emergency repairs on a major transmission pipeline.

The Board says operations resumed on Friday.

In a statement that Malawi24 has seen, BWB said the repairs were carried out on the main transmission pipeline running from Walkers Ferry Pumping Station to Chileka Pumping Station.

The Board, however, said water supply would not immediately return to all areas, as the system is still gradually recovering.

“Water has resumed in some areas while in others not yet,” BWB said, adding that it will continue using water bowsers to supply areas that remain dry.

The interruption followed damage to the transmission pipeline, which BWB said was linked to increasing incidents of vandalism targeting its water supply infrastructure.

The Board described vandalism as a major setback to the provision of clean water in Blantyre, saying the recent damage resulted in dry taps for three continuous days and disrupted delivery of the essential service.

While the water shortages seem to be sorted, at least for now, Blantyre residents, just like the rest of the country still have two other headaches refusing to go away.

Blackouts continue to leave homes and businesses in the dark, while fuel shortages keep motorists trapped in long queues, leaving the city battling three daily essentials, water, electricity and fuel.
