A lion has put residents of Mpherembe in Mzimba on alert after escaping from Vwaza Wildlife Reserve and roaming free for about two weeks.
Director of Forestry Bright Kumchedwa has warned residents to remain vigilant as wildlife rangers continue searching for the animal.
Kumchedwa issued the warning today following reports that the lion had been sighted in the Mpherembe area.
He urged residents to avoid travelling alone and instead move in groups as a precaution against a possible encounter with the animal.
The warning comes amid concerns that the lion could pose a danger to human life if it moves into areas where people live and travel.
The Forestry Department has also urged residents to report any suspected sighting of the lion to authorities immediately.
Wildlife rangers remain on the ground searching for the animal.
Authorities have advised communities in the affected area to remain alert until the lion is found.
