What was supposed to be a solemn farewell to a loved one in Motolosi Village, Mitundu, Lilongwe, on Saturday reportedly turned into an unusual spectacle after a chicken interrupted the funeral and refused to leave the coffin.
According to witnesses, mourners had gathered for the funeral service when the chicken suddenly walked through the crowd and made its way towards the coffin. Instead of wandering away, it climbed onto the coffin and settled there, leaving those gathered at the ceremony puzzled.
Attempts to scare the bird away reportedly failed. The chicken remained on the coffin as though it had no intention of surrendering its unexpected position, turning the attention of mourners away from the proceedings and towards the strange visitor.
The situation became so unusual that the pastor reportedly stopped before delivering the sermon. With the chicken still perched on the coffin, traditional leaders eventually instructed the pallbearers to proceed with the funeral procession to the cemetery.
