Former Malawi Army commander Paul Valentino Phiri will today return home after the court granted him bail.
Phiri appeared before the court on allegations linked to arms smuggling, breach of procurement procedures and abuse of office between June and July 2025.
His lawyer, Powell Mkhutabasa, told the court that the case will proceed to full hearing on November 12, 2026.
The court granted Phiri bail on a K10 million bond, while his two sureties have each signed a K20 million bond.
The sureties will be required to pay the stated amount if Phiri breaches his bail conditions or absconds.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shukuran Kumbani has also ordered Phiri to report to the police once every month as part of his bail conditions.
