Malawi’s mobile phone market could soon have a new player, potentially changing the way millions of subscribers choose their network.
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says the expected entrant could intensify competition between the country’s two existing operators, TNM and Airtel..
MACRA Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma said the authority is preparing to introduce what he described as a “disruptor” to the telecommunications market, giving consumers more choice when selecting a mobile network.
Nkoloma made the remarks when MACRA officials appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by Steve Baba Malondera.
The officials were appearing before the committee to respond to issues raised in the Auditor General’s report concerning financial matters at the communications regulator.
Nkoloma said the planned third operator is intended to create greater competition in the telecommunications sector and provide consumers with an additional network option.
The development comes as Malawi continues to seek greater competition and improved services in the telecommunications industry.
