Malawian R&B singer Kell Kay has shocked Zambia with a surprise pick for Malawi’s biggest star, defying a recent Zambian Facebook poll that crowned Zeze over Zambia’s sweetheart, Driemo.

And the name he pulled out of the hat? Eli Njuchi, the “Yabaya” hitmaker Kell Kay boldly named as his personal favourite while chatting on the Kenn T Podcast in Zambia.

The choice appeared to catch the Zambian side off guard, particularly the podcast host, who admitted he had never heard of the claimed Malawian star.

“I am not disrespecting him, but I don’t know him,” the host confessed.

The Kawale ghetto-raised artist had been asked to name Malawi’s biggest act and did not hesitate before putting Eli at the top.

“The good thing about Malawi is that everyone has a preference when mentioning the biggest artist,” Kell Kay responded, without outlining the grounds for his choice.

His verdict contrasts sharply with the poll, which crowned Zeze as Malawi’s current biggest artist ahead of Driemo.

In the wide-ranging interview, which lasted almost an hour, Kell Kay also opened up about his relationship with the late rapper Martse, describing him as his best friend and revealing that the two once fell out.

In a lighter moment, the “Holywater” hitmaker spilled the beans that he has never drunk alcohol in his life, but paid tribute to imbibers for sustaining his income through performances at drinking joints.

He also named Zeze, Driemo, Lulu, Gwamba, Saint, Charisma, Skeffa Chimoto, Teddy and other artists in his top ten of favourites.

Dressed in all black, save for a pair of white shoes, Kell Kay touched on a number of topics during the conversation, which has since sparked debate among music fans online in both Malawi and Zambia.
