Malawi’s ageing population raises new concerns

Living longer is becoming a growing challenge for thousands of older Malawians, as declining fertility and rising life expectancy reshape the country’s population.

The shift is raising fresh concerns over healthcare, social protection and economic security for people aged 60 and above.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Disability says Malawi’s ageing population is steadily increasing and the trend is expected to continue in the coming decades.

The Ministry says this will put pressure on systems designed to provide essential services and support for older persons.

The issue will take centre stage on Thursday, October 1, when Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 2026 International Day of Older Persons.

The national commemoration will be held at Chimwala Primary School Ground in Mangochi District under the theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.”

The Ministry, with support from the German Government through GIZ, has invited stakeholders, development partners, the media and the public to attend the event.
