FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women moved to the top of the NBM Women’s Premiership after edging Civil Service Women 1-0 at Civo Stadium on Sunday.
Vanessa Issa scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound to break the deadlock in a match that remained goalless for more than an hour.
The victory takes Bullets to six points from two matches, with their perfect record now putting them at the summit on goal difference.
Civil started brightly and had opportunities to take the lead, with Anna Bazilio among those who came close. She headed wide from a good cross in the first half before later firing over from inside the box after the break.
Bullets also threatened from set pieces, with Mary Chavinda repeatedly delivering dangerous balls into the Civil box. However, Civil’s defence managed to clear several attempts as the hosts kept the visitors at bay.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Ireen Mbesa’s effort created the rebound that fell kindly for Issa, who made no mistake from close range to give Bullets the lead.
Civil pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with captain Mirrium Josiki missing a late opportunity after receiving a long ball from Vitumbiko Mkandawire.
Bullets held on to claim all three points, with Chavinda’s influential display earning her the Player of the Match award as the champions left Civo Stadium sitting at the top of the league table.
