Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleman has accused some leaders of stealing public money and wasting resources such as fertiliser that could help improve the lives of poor Malawians.
Suleman said it is regrettable that some people entrusted with leadership are allegedly involved in stealing funds and mismanaging resources meant to benefit vulnerable citizens.
He made the remarks at the Dawah 2026 Islamic gathering in Lilongwe, where he called for leaders who fear God and have the courage to confront the challenges facing the country.
Suleman’s comments come amid growing debate over corruption and the management of public resources, as he pushes for Parliament to investigate concerns affecting government institutions and service delivery.
In September, the Speaker announced plans for parliamentary committees to investigate 12 issues, including fuel supply, electricity, fertiliser distribution, pension delays and passport services. The proposed inquiries were intended to address complaints from members of the public about the management of public resources and the delivery of essential services.
However, the planned investigations have faced a legal challenge, with the High Court temporarily stopping Parliament from establishing or operationalising the committees pending further proceedings. The dispute has raised questions about the scope of Parliament’s oversight powers and its relationship with the Executive.
At the Dawah gathering, Suleman said resources such as fertiliser should be helping to transform the lives of poor people rather than being wasted through the conduct of some leaders.
His remarks place renewed focus on the accountability of public officials and whether resources intended to support vulnerable Malawians are reaching those who need them.
The 2026 Dawah gathering is being held under the theme, “Islam and global challenges: How can religion be used to address these challenges?”
Grand Mufti Muhammad Uthuman also called on Muslims to fear God, maintain peace and work hard while avoiding dishonesty and corruption.
