Mother of a five-year-old girl allegedly defiled in Mzimba has appealed for swift justice following the arrest of a 32-year-old man in connection with the case.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Phiri, is currently in police custody and is expected to appear before the Mzuzu Magistrate’s Court.
Malawi24 understands that Phiri has a previous conviction for defiling a nine-year-old child and was released from prison about three years ago after serving approximately six years.
Medical examination results seen by Malawi24 indicate that the child was sexually abused, with the findings submitted to authorities as part of the ongoing investigation.
In an interview, the girl’s mother, Bertha Lyson, said the alleged abuse has caused her immense pain and wants authorities to expedite investigations.
“I need to see justice being done for my child. I am a single mother raising my children alone, and it is painful to see my child go through this. I am appealing to the authorities to handle the matter expeditiously so that justice can prevail,” said Lyson.
Concurrently, Chindi Women’s Forum has also urged authorities to handle the matter swiftly and thoroughly while protecting the child’s rights and welfare.
The organization has further called on parents, guardians and community members to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse to relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, Mzimba South Social Welfare Officer Bernard Nangwale says his office is monitoring the matter and working with relevant authorities to safeguard the child’s welfare.
“Our office is closely following this matter with keen interest. We are concerned about the welfare and protection of the child, and we will continue engaging with the relevant authorities to ensure that the case is handled appropriately and in accordance with the law,” said Nangwale.
Phiri hails from Emutelelela Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba District.
