Davido follows AfriForum playbook, calls on Trump to intervene in African political dispute
Nigerian music superstar Davido has followed a path recently associated with South Africa’s white supremacists AfriForum by appealing directly to United States President Donald Trump for international attention over a domestic African political dispute.
Davido has asked Trump and the international community to closely watch developments in Nigeria’s Osun State ahead of the election, warning of possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.
“A CALL FOR ATTENTION TO PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP,” Davido posted on X (formerly Twitter) in a public statement addressed directly to the US president.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process. Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election.” he tweeted while tagging President Trump.
The intervention echoes a controversial strategy used by Afrikaner white supremacist group AfriForum, which has taken domestic South African political grievances to Washington and sought the attention of Trump and other US officials. The group backed by X owner, Elon Musk, is behind some of the sanctions imposed by the US on South Africa. They even lied to Trump who is considered as pro-white that white people in South Africa were facing genocide
Trump has also previously turned his attention to Nigeria, claiming that Christians in the country face an existential threat while accusing Nigerian authorities of failing to sufficiently protect them.
Davido, whose full name is David Adeleke, also has a direct family connection to the political contest in Osun.
His uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is the governor of Osun State. As such, some critics have accused Davido of using his international profile to draw attention to the issue in order to protect his family’s political interests.
