Zimbabwe has denied a $367m (£272m) five-year health deal funding from the US because of Washington’s demand for sensitive data.
According to reports, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe felt the deal was “lopsided” because the US was demanding access to biological samples for research and commercial gain, but was not willing to share the benefits for future vaccines and treatments.
However, US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pamela Tremont indicated in a statement that the US will now turn to the difficult and regrettable task of winding down its health assistance in Zimbabwe.
The Embassy also highlighted that the US has been providing more than $1.9 billion in health funding to Zimbabwe over the past twenty years.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that Malawi sold its health data to the US for a five-year $936 million bilateral health corporation agreement.
