The civil society group Malawi First has issued a 20-day ultimatum to the authorities, threatening nationwide demonstrations over alleged interference in a forensic audit at the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

Led by Bon Kalindo, the group delivered formal petitions to the central bank and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, demanding urgent investigations into claims that senior officials attempted to tamper with an ongoing audit linked to the Pension Fund.

Kalindo alleges that confidential documents are being leaked to discredit the Pension Fund Board and undermine the forensic audit, warning that such actions risk compromising accountability within Malawi’s financial governance system.

The petition to the Anti-Corruption Bureau was received by Mphatso Kalongonda, Acting Director of Corporate Services, who said the Director General would act accordingly based on the evidence submitted.

At the central bank, the petition was received by Mercy Kumbatira, Executive Director for Corporate Services, on behalf of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Ma. However, the institution did not immediately comment on the allegations.

Malawi First is demanding protection of the forensic audit from interference, suspension of two unnamed senior officials pending investigations, publication of the audit findings, and swift action by the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

The group has warned that failure to respond within 20 days will leave it with “no choice” but to mobilize Malawians for peaceful nationwide demonstrations to demand transparency and safeguard pension funds.
