Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito has dismissed opposition claims that the government is silent on rising insecurity, insisting authorities are actively investigating the abduction of a Crossroads Hotel official in Lilongwe.

The victim, Sameer Sacranie, Managing Director of Crossroads Hotel, was reportedly seized by armed men in broad daylight earlier this month, heightening fears over public safety.

His remarks come amid mounting pressure from the opposition, led by Simplex Chithyola Banda, who has accused the government of failing to guarantee security following the arrest of two MPs during committee meetings and alleged growing political intimidation.

Addressing journalists in Parliament on Tuesday, Mukhito said police recently issued an update and are carefully managing information to protect both the integrity of investigations and the trauma of the victim’s family.

“We are on top of the investigations,” he said, assuring Malawians that once there is a breakthrough, the nation will be informed.

The minister also revealed that police operations have led to the recovery of illegal firearms, though no individuals have voluntarily surrendered weapons.

He urged members of the public still holding illegal guns to hand them over, warning that unlawful possession of firearms remains a criminal offence as security agencies intensify operations.
