The Everlasting Life Ministry church has donated clothes to patients with mental illnesses at Zomba Mental Hospital.
Speaking during the donation, a Social Worker at Everlasting Life Ministry, Catherine Chikopa, said they decided to assist in learning that patients at the hospital often lack clothes when they are discharged and return home, because at times they tear their own clothes.
Chikopa said this was the first time for their church to provide clothing assistance to patients at the hospital, and they donated a total of 1,300 items of clothing, which amounted to about 32 cartons.
She said many people do not realize that patients with mental illnesses in the hospital lack many necessities such as clothes and other essential items.
Chikopa appealed to churches, organizations, and well-wishers to take part in helping patients with mental illnesses at Zomba Mental Hospital, saying the government alone cannot manage to provide all the necessities required at the facility.
“We are impressed with the warm reception we received from the management at Zomba Mental Hospital, and we are satisfied with the way they are providing care to patients with mental illnesses,” he said.
On his part, the Principal Nursing Officer at Zomba Mental Hospital, Pascal Kalolo, thanked Everlasting Life Ministry for the donation of clothing to the patients.
He said that currently Zomba Mental Hospital has over 600 patients, and many of them lack clothing because they sometimes tear their clothes due to their condition, forcing the hospital to often give them clothes belonging to hospital staff.
Kalolo also appealed to well-wishers to visit the hospital and assist the patients with various items.
