Barely four days after Malawi24 published a report highlighting a prolonged water shortage at Vibangalala Health Centre in Mzimba South, authorities have acted swiftly to resolve the problem, restoring running water at the facility.
Officials from the Mzimba South District Health Office (DHO) have confirmed that the health centre’s water system is now fully functional, bringing much-needed relief to both patients and healthcare workers who had been operating without a reliable water supply.

The restoration follows heightened public attention generated by the Malawi24 report, which exposed the serious challenges the facility faced due to the lack of water an essential resource for healthcare delivery, sanitation, and infection prevention.
Investigations revealed that the disruption was caused by a damaged electrical switch that had remained unrepaired for several months. The faulty switch was later identified as the primary factor preventing the water system from operating.
Sources indicate that the cost of replacing the switch ranged between K35,000 and K50,000, an amount that contributed to delays in carrying out the repairs for a year.
Members of the surrounding community have since commended Malawi24 for amplifying their concerns and prompting action from the relevant authorities.
One community member, Steve Jere, expressed his appreciation in a WhatsApp message, praising the impact of the publication’s intervention.
“Because of your effort, tapped water is now fully functional. Thank you very much Malawi24, brother. Information is power. Akulu imwe yayi mwayigwira ntchito. I salute you,” Jere wrote.
The restoration of water at Vibangalala Health Centre is expected to significantly improve service delivery, hygiene standards, and overall patient care.
This development underscores the critical role of the media in promoting accountability and driving positive change, particularly in underserved communities where essential services often remain neglected until brought to public attention.
