The Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) have seized 94 vehicles in a nationwide joint operation aimed at promoting road safety and enforcing traffic laws.
The operation, conducted across the country, saw the Central West Region recording the highest number of seizures with 29 vehicles, followed by the Eastern Region with 27, the Northern Region with 22, and the South West Region with 16.
Alfred Chimthere, Deputy Public Relations Officer, said in a statement that most of the seized vehicles are privately owned, highlighting the need for individual motorists to comply with traffic regulations.
The MPS warns that the joint operation will continue, and any vehicle found violating traffic laws will be impounded.
The move is in response to the alarming rate of road accidents in Malawi, with 3,984 accidents recorded in 2025, resulting in 1,033 deaths and 493 serious injuries.
Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are registered and fitted with valid number plates to avoid penalties.
