Football Association of Malawi has expressed sadness over the death of Humphrey Gondwe, owner and sponsor of Northern Regional Womens Football League side CY Sisters FC.
Gondwe is also husband to National Women’s Football Association Treasurer Clara Luhanga.
He died on Wednesday at Mzuzu Central Hospital in Mzuzu after a long illness.
Reacting to the news, Chairperson for the National Women’s Football Association Suzgo Ngwira said Gondwe’s death is a great loss to Women’s football.
“As NWFA, we are saddened with the death of Mr Gondwe as he has contributed a lot in developing the game of Women’s Football in the country. He was sponsoring one of the most successful teams in the country and the gap he has left will be hard to fill.
“We send our deepest condolences to our Treasurer Clara and we pray that God should comfort her in this difficult time,” said Ngwira.
Gondwe and Clara established CY Sisters in 2009 and over the years, the team has won the Northern Regional Presidential Cup three times and Northern Region FAM Women’s League twice.
He will be laid to rest on Friday, 29th April 2022 at Thumbi in Rumphi. May His Soul Rest in Peace.
