Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Aggrey Masi has urged independent power producers to build confidence in providing energy to Malawians by collaborating with regional players.

Masi said this during Regional Energy Regulatory Association (RERA) for Southern Africa conference organised by Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) and Bankers Association of Malawi (BAM).

Masi: local energy producers should have confidence

Delegates from 12 countries discussed energy issues in the region at the two day conference which began on Tuesday and ended on Wednesday.

Speaking with reporters at BICC in Lilongwe, Masi said people in the country are supposed to come forward and participate in the issues regarding energy.

Masi added that local energy producers should have confidence to carry out energy projects since players such as banks under BAM are committed to support local power producers financially and administratively.

“We need to come together and strategize by doing so we will not be lagging behind and we will continue to move forward,” he explained

The minister however expressed concern over the low turn up of independent power producers at the conference.

RERA Executive secretariat Elijah Sichone said the conference is important since it involved knowledge and solution sharing in terms of energy in the SADC region.

He added that the aim is to increase access and affordability of power in the region.

The conference was hosted under the theme Building and Regulating a Sustainable Energy Future -case for the SADC region.
