Despite efforts to end cases of girls being abused sexually, a senior Malawi police officer in Chitipa district has been arrested after he attempted to rape his 14 year-old in law.
The suspected rapist Kelvin Kumwenda is reported to have sexually abused the Standard 7 girl who stays with him at his house.
Confirming the development, Northern Region police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said the suspect called the girl into his room when he arrived from a drinking joint around 9pm.
When the girl got into the room, the paedophile started to undress her.
Kalaya added that the girl was rescued by relations who were in the house as the suspect sexually assaulted her.
The young girl later reported the matter to her headteacher who informed the district social welfare office and officials tipped the Police on issue.
The suspect is yet to appear in court to answer charges of indecent assault contrary to section 155 of Malawi penal code.
Kumwenda comes from Mwanamwene village, Traditional Authority (TA) Nthwalo in Mzimba district.
