President Peter Mutharika might have to discuss with himself the row over Lake Malawi that the country has been dragged in by her neighbour Tanzania if he is to still go ahead with his plans to discuss the lake row at the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)  in the US.

Information that Malawi24 has indicates that the Tanzanian leader who has been championed as a serious reformer with the heart to move Tanzania forward will not be attending the UNGA.

According to media reports from Tanzania, John Magufuli has had to cancel his trip to the UNGA over an earthquake disaster that struck the country killing about 19 people and leaving 200 others injured.

“The President will be represented at the General Assembly meeting. He has decided to stay home because of the Kagera earthquake disaster,” said Ms Mindi Kasiga, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, East African, Regional and International Cooperation.

She told a Tanzanian newspaper, The Citizen, that Magufuli had postponed all foreign trips to deal with the aftermath the disaster that has claimed at least 19 lives and left over 200 others injured.

President Mutharika had highlighted that apart from attending the UNGA, he would also be meeting with the Tanzanian leader over the lake row on the side-lines of the UNGA.

However Tanzania has disclosed that it will disclose the official that will represent Magufuli in Tanzania. It might be that person who will meet with Mutharika.
